Here’s everything you need to know about the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer:
What is the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer?
The Deer is the main antagonist of 99 Nights in the Forest. It’s a hostile entity that only appears at night, hunting down players who stray too far from the campfire or outside of the Cultist Stronghold. It’s a tall deer-like creature that generally walks on its hind legs, but can also run on all fours. It has large antlers and a gaping jaw, claws on its front legs, and hooves on its hind legs.
Here are the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer’s stats:
Behavior: hostile
HP: N/A
Damage: 25+ (increases with day count and hunger)
Walkspeed: 35+ (increases with day count and hunger)
In terms of lore, it’s confirmed that the Deer is affiliated with the cultists, and it’s responsible for kidnapping and hiding the four missing children.

What are the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer variants?
The 99 Nights in the Forest Deer has three variants – normal, hungry, and Halloween. The normal variant is its standard form, which is how you’ll most commonly see the deer. However, when the Deer is hungry, it goes into a frenzy-like state, during which its eyes turn red.
Finally, the Deer’s Halloween variant is, as the name suggests, a special variant that appeared during the 2025 Halloween event. Throughout this event, the Deer wore a vampire costume with a high red collar, sharp fangs, and small bat wings. This variant was merely cosmetic, though, and didn’t change the Deer’s stats or behavior.
Where does the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer spawn?
The Deer spawns in the forest biome when night begins. However, if the snow biome is present, there’s a chance that the Owl will spawn instead of the Deer. Similarly, if the volcanic biome is present, the Ram might spawn instead. The Deer won’t spawn if either the Owl or Ram are active.

What is the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer’s behavior?
The Deer spawns at night and will pathfind a straight line towards the nearest player, relentlessly pursuing them. When it first spawns, there’s a chance that one of three short cutscenes will play – the Deer eating a bear, Cultists worshipping the Deer, or the Deer dragging an alpha wolf’s corpse – which indicates that the Deer will be present for each of the following nights.
Initially, you can easily outrun the Deer, but its movement speed increases the longer it pursues you. Luckily, the Deer won’t trespass into the campfire’s safe zone and will retreat back into the forest if you make it there. You can also use flashlights to stun the Deer, but it will recover faster each time you do this.
Aside from this, the Deer has a few other notable behaviors. Firstly, it won’t attack on the first night, so you don’t need to worry about sticking too close to the campfire, and it remains mostly dormant during the first few nights, becoming more active as you progress through a match. It also won’t try to kill any players outside of the campfire during cultist raids, and you can scare it away by walking up to it – though it will still hunt you down if you’re too far away from your camp.
What does it mean when the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer is hungry?
As mentioned above, the Deer can also enter a frenzy-like state when it’s hungry. When in the hungry state, the Deer’s walkspeed and damage both increase, and it gains heavy resistance to stuns, meaning your flashlight won’t be as effective.
When the Deer is hungry, the game will warn you with two messages. The first says, “the Deer is hungry tonight,” then it will remind you that “night is approaching, the Deer is hungry tonight.” The Deer will also enter this state if the campfire runs out of fuel, at which point it will spawn on top of the campfire. As the days pass, the chances of the Deer being hungry increase.
Can I kill the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer?
No, the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer is immortal, so you can’t kill it. It actually has no HP, so hitting it with weapons won’t do a thing. However, as we said earlier, you can use your flashlight to temporarily stun it and give yourself the chance to run away – just be wary of the diminishing returns, as the more you spam the flashlight at the Deer, the more resistant the Deer will become to it.

99 Nights in the Forest Deer tips
While you can’t defeat the Deer, there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you survive to see the next day.
Here are some tips on how to survive the 99 Nights in the Forest Deer:
- The Deer is actually harmless and won’t hunt you on the first day, even if you exit the campfire’s safe area, giving you a great opportunity to explore and gather useful materials for later
- The Deer’s pathfinding is pretty bad, so you can use environmental obstacles like trees or buildings to block it during a chase, allowing you to gain some distance
- If you get the notification that the Deer is hungry, aim to be back at your campfire extra early that evening so you don’t get caught when night falls. If you’re far from your camp, you can use a teleporter to get back to base, then continue the next day
- If your campfire goes out at night, start running away from it immediately, as the Deer will spawn on top of it (just be careful of other entities like wolves when running away at night – you can use tip #2 to avoid these, too!)
