Kazutaka Kodaka’s upcoming Danganronpa 2×2 is no way a remake of the endearingly psychopathic 2012 game Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, highlights the legend of the visual novel against GamesRadar+.
Kodaka, the ambitious creator of both Danganronpa and 2025’s unimaginably massive strategy RPG The Hundred Line, tells us that Danganronpa 2×2 is actually “a game that is not a remake of Danganronpa 2, but rather uses the characters in a new story and scenario in a new setting.”
So yes, both Danganronpa 2 and Danganronpa 2×2 take you as a student on a tropical getaway to the lush Jabberwock Island. Steam pages for both visual novels advertise the same screenshot – although the modern one is a fresher and more vibrant mango colour. And it’s true that both visual novels have the deceptively cute teddy bear Monokuma forcing you into a game of mass murder. But it won’t be the exact same mass murder, okay?
“We hope we can see fans enjoying these characters in the new, updated version of it,” Kodaka continues about Danganronpa 2×2, reiterating that the game is “not a remake, but rather a retelling of that story” in Danganronpa 2.
That said, Kodaka admits it was “nostalgic” to work on the unconventional murder mystery series again. He says, “To be able to work with the characters from ten years ago and bring them back into the new setting that they can be used in, it’s definitely a nostalgic feeling. It brings back memories if I can keep working on them.”
Call it a comeback, if you like. Just don’t call it a remake.
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy isn’t quite Persona XCOM, but it’s absolutely perfect to enjoy via Steam Deck.
